 1. Organisation, Function & Duties:

 

 1.1. Organisation:-

(a) The NMNH is a sub-ordinate office of the Ministry of Environment & Forests with the objective of Environmental Education through non-formal and informal methods.
(b) The NMNH was opened to public on 5th June in 1978 on the occasion of World Environment Day.
(c) The NMNH at present has three permanent Galleries (“Introduction to Natural History”, “Ecology: Understanding Nature” and “Conservation”), creative areas (“Discovery Room” and “Activity room”) and Temporary Exhibition area (4th Floor)
(d) The NMNH has a Headquarter in New Delhi and Regional offices in Southern Region (Mysore), Central Region (Bhopal), and Eastern Region (Bhubaneswar). An office in Western Region (Sawai Madhopur) is in the process of completion. A new Office in North Eastern Region (Gangtok) is being established.

 

 1.2. Functions and Duties:-

(a) Implementation of policies of the MoEF under the scheme Environmental education (EE), training and awareness.
(b) Implementation of policies of the MoEF applicable to the objectives of the Museum under other schemes/ programmes such as Environment management in Heritage/ Tourism centres, Traditional knowledge about Biodiversity, Media etc
(c) Extend the geographical coverage of Environmental education, awareness and training mandate of the MoEF through NMNH by establishing offices at Regional, States/UT and facilitating linkages at district levels with Museums/ organizations/ NGOs..
(d) Work towards natural history curatorship by way of collection, conservation, documentation, research, and exhibition of representative samples of flora and fauna for the purpose of education.
(e) Undertake awareness among general public about environment through non-formal and informal methods.
(f) Extend Environmental education to schools by formal methods so as to help them for curriculum development on Environment.
(g) Undertake special programmes aimed at social inclusion for the benefit of Persons with disabilities and those marginally excluded.
(h) Extend professional help to other organizations for establishment of new and re-structuring of existing collections/ museums of natural history.
(i) Organise professional capacity building programmes for Museologists in the country on all aspects of Natural history Museology.
(j) Undertake professional collaborative programmes with Museums and institutions outside India and through ICOM-NATHIST (International Council of Museums’s Committee on Collections/ Museums of Natural History).
